The Six Pillars Framework

We have defined a framework of 6 Pillars for analyzing an engineering group structure in terms of typical processes that every engineering group undertakes. Any group doing modeling and simulation faces challenges in the creation, management, and communication of the artifacts associated with a design or simulation. From customer requirements to simulation results, from performance monitoring to revision management, the engineering/design team must keep track of many types of information, in many formats, across the life span of a project. The 6 pillars framework provides the structure for analyzing and improving the processes and tools used by team members.

The framework is based on insights accumulated from our extensive I.T. expertise, the 4 year NIST Advanced Technology Program, decades of work with leading engineering companies, and best practices from Software Engineering. The 6 pillars provide the foundation for engineering group design and analysis activities, enabling them to meet increases in competitive pressures and resulting in greater innovation and profitability. The objective of engineering strategy should be to address these 6 pillars and implement the appropriate tools and processes in a way that improves the position of the engineering group
